The Iditarod looks really tough. You need to cover 1,161 miles with nothing but your dogs to you help you. What makes it worse however, it's held in Alaska! With wind chill reaching 100 degrees Farenheit, I shudder (even without the cold) to think of the ordeal.

Breeds like the Siberian Husky and the Canadian Eskimo dogs are famous for being sled dogs are and most used in these kinds of races. The physical strength, speed, and endurance that are needed are truly remarkable and they have been known to travel 90 miles in a day pulling 85 pounds each!

The Iditarod is completed by teams of 12 to 16 dogs and managing them throughout the race requires skill and dedication, not to mention the ability to stay in the cold for so long. No wonder the winners of the race are celebrities!

Every week Euro Puppy showcases a dog lamp. Is it tacky or wacky? We will leave it up to you to decide. While having our own beliefs, we would love your comments...Enjoy....

Silver Retriever Lamp

The lamp for this week is an interesting piece, because we have a Silver Retriever instead of a Golden one :) .

The design is from Judith Edwards and is intended to compliment a library. The books below the lamp are part of it, and heighten the effect of serious study.

Another attribute of this dog lamp is that the shade is made of faux leather, accentuating the effect of soft light. You can fix a 60 watt lamp onto it and it is 2 feet high. Just the right height for a desk to gently illuminate your study!

Wacky or tacky, what do you think?

The Basset Hound has an amazing sense of smell. Second only the Blood Hound in this regard, they were initially bred for hunting Rabbits. Their long ears are often the subject of much comment!

Their noses mean that they respond exceptionally well to all promises of food while training. Here is a poem about their amazing sense of smell.....

The saggy baggy Basset Hound
has ears that nearly touch the ground
with mournful eyes and wrinkled skin
that hangs below his droopy chin

But Basset has a clever snout
His nose will always sniff you out
With this amazing nasal asset
nothing an get past the Basset

How many of us have remembered our first dog? How we used to prevent him or her from sitting on the couch, the bed, or sleeping under the blankets. And then little by little, they worm their way in!

Let us see how this progresses....

Happy Holidays from Euro Puppy

I've had this issue several times before. Looking your dog in the eye always means that it's a slightly tense time between the two of you. Staring each other down is a means of determining domination. We all know this at some level. We see children trying this game out on each other regularly (I'm sure we've done it ourselves with other humans). We instinctively know that whoever looks away first lost somehow lost in some way.

Dog

If your dog looks at you in the eye and doesn't back down, it can often mean that your dog doesn't view you as the alpha person in the house. This isn't okay, since it can mean that your dog might not obey you and might act in violation of your wishes.

Ideally, a dog can look at you for a while and then drop his or her eyes after a while. Remember however, that you're not doing this to prove to yourself how powerful you are. You're just trying to reinforce the message to your dog that you retain the dominant post in your household pack.

If your dog stares at you, you must stare back. Chances are they will take the hint and back off or come and lick you.

Remember though to judge the mood. If you have something in your hand and your dog is just sitting happily, wagging her tail and looking at you, it doesn't mean that it's a game of dominance!

We all know Denise Richards as the "Bond Girl" in "The World is not enough". She may not want to be remembered for that as she got the dubious award for the worst Bond Girl of all time!

Nonetheless, she has been consistently ranked as one of the most beautiful women in the world and she's chosen a French Bulldog to keep her company. His name is Hunk.

Denise Richards and her French Bulldog

French Bulldogs are one of the best known apartment dogs. In fact, their flat nose, and body shape prevent them from effectively regulating their temperature outdoors. In spite of this, they are considered to be one of the healthiest Bull Breeds.

They are well known for their easy going ways and make ideal companions. Historically, though the breed has a French Prefix, they were mostly developed in the US and Britain. A common name for the breed is Frenchie!

Would you like to see similar cute French Bulldog puppies? Check out what Euro Puppy has to offer!

It seems that people find their pets much more interesting that their own husbands or wives? In a recent survey, it was determined that just about 40% of people admitted to taking many more pictures of their dogs than of their own spouses.

I wonder what this signifies. Is it that people realize that their dogs are not going to be around them for long and this is their attempt to capture as much of them as possible?

Another reason is that we view them as children. We all know how parents obsessively click pictures of their kids when they're still young and cute!

However, I personally feel that we take so many pictures because of their innocence. Since our dogs lack a hidden agenda, we find it very much more refreshing than pictures of anyone else. We know they won't get vain about having their picture taken so often, and the best part is that they don't even know that they're being snapped. This makes them more genuine photos than any other!

At least that's MY theory.

Pedro & Rosita

It's a romantic full moon, when Pedro said, "Hey, mamacita, let's do Weeweechu."

"Oh no, not now, let's look at the moon!" said Rosita.

"Oh, c'mon baby, let's you and I do Weeweechu. I love you and it's the perfect time," Pedro begged.

"But I wanna just hold your hand and watch the moon." replied Rosita.

"Please, corazoncito, just once, do Weeweechu with me."

Rosita looked at Pedro and said, "OK, one time, we'll do Weeweechu."

Pedro grabbed his guitar and they both sang.....

"Weeweechu, Weeweechu, Weeweechu a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year."

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!

Scottish Terrier Dog Lamp.

This 14 inch high Scottish Terrier Dog Lamp is perfect for a playful atmosphere in the room. The effect is accentuated by the checkered lamp shade and the ball stem.

The bow tie around the neck of the scottie is a very pretty touch and suggests that the lamp should find a place in a girl's room. The lamp uses a standard 60 watt bulb, and this makes it good enough to use when reading, or as a stand alone to light a room.

As our dogs grow older, we realize that our current comfort with them is but a passing time. Does that mean that it's less real? Not at all. Only we who have had dogs know the value of that time spent with our friends.

As Townsend says in this poem below, we live in a "Fragile Circle".

SEPARATE LIFETIMES

We who choose to surround ourselves
with lives even more temporary than our
own, live within a fragile circle;
easily and often breached.
Unable to accept its awful gaps,
we would still live no other way.
We cherish memory as the only
certain immortality, never fully
understanding the neccesary plan....

--- Irving Townsend ---
"The Once Again Prince"

It is very true that we would choose no other way to live.
Unlike Humans, dogs can get away with openly disliking someone. So the next time someone from the utility or government department comes into your home without your permission, you can always "go easy" on your dog when he or she growls at them!

After all, they're dogs aren't they?

One phenomenon that you will be confronted with when you have a dog, is something called separation anxiety. This means that when you leave your dog alone and go out, they engage in unhealthy behavior like biting on furniture, or pushing over garbage cans.

Dogs over the fence
Image Credit: Bill in Ash Vegas

This is caused by the dog's not being mentally prepared to be left alone. One theory is that if the dog views itself as the alpha dog, then there is anxiety when the others leave because it is either worried for them, or because it's not acceptable for the followers to leave the leader. So the image that the dog has for itself is challenged.

Another view is that people make too much of a fuss when leaving the house like saying excessive good byes. The dog picks up on this negative emotion and feels that leaving the house is bad. The way to overcome this is to make leaving as normal an activity as possible so that the dog doesn't see anything great in it.

Another option that is suggested by dog trainers is to keep them busy while they're gone. Sprinkle some food in such a way that they will have to work to find it! Or get some toy that has a reward mechanism.

Elizabeth Taylor was the last of the Actresses in the Golden Age of Hollywood. At one point of time, she was also considered to be the most beautiful woman on Earth. Indeed, her appearance in Cleopatra is legendary.

Liz Taylor

When her dog Sugar died in 2005, Taylor adopeted Daisy - a Maltese. They are an excellent breed for old people, as they are specially bred to be companions. The fact that it seems unaware of it's small size makes them great for socializing with other dogs and even (surprise surprise!) cats.

Unlike most dogs, they do not need much outdoor exercise and do very well in an apartment. They are therefore one of the most suitable breeds for apartment dwellers. They also lack an undercoat which reduces shedding to a minimum with proper care.

They are also known for their screaming pitch when alerting their owners to intruders. Legend has it that the Romans used them along with Rottweilers to alert the camp of the enemy presence at night.

The Integrative Cancer Therapies Journal has provided scientific evidence that dogs are able to sniff out Cancer! We all know that the dog's sense of smell is exceptional, being able to detect chemicals that are diluted to one part in trillion.

Dogs smelling out cancer

However, this new fact is truly astonishing. Apparently, a certain dog constantly sniffed the lesion of it's owner alerting him to the fact that something was wrong. It was determined that he had Melanoma - a type of skin Cancer.

Clinical trials have established that trained dogs can sniff out lung and breast Cancer with accuracies of between 88% to 97%! An astonishing fact.

The study was conducted using standard double blind tests which means that neither the dogs, nor even those carrying out the experiments knew the patients in any way. Those conducting the test were not even aware of who had cancer. So the chances of even mild suggestion were ruled out.

It's amazing how our canine friends can help us. In so many different ways, they show that they are the truest companions.

A Porcelain Work of Art.

This week we feature a really interesting lamp. At first glance it doesn't look to sophisticated until you realize that this puppy lamp is made of translucent porcelain.

In addition, the eyes are made of glass. The best part however, is the perfume chamber behind the neck of the dog where the lamp heats the liquid, diffusing the perfume into the air.

Dog Lam from Germany

The perfume will be based on Isopropyl alcohol and will therefore be highly flammable. Careful! The originality of this piece is displayed when you look carefully and find tiny pin sized holes in the porcelain that occurred during the firing process.

In addition, the ensure that the porcelain will not crack from the heat, notice the series of holes in the top of his head! A great specimen.

Wacky or tacky, what do you think?

Someone once said "Whoever said that money can't buy happiness forgot small puppies". That thought is absolutely true! The $25 my mother spent to get me my first dog was an investment that lasted our family for 14 years and gave us all the love she could.

Never underestimate the joy and happiness a dog can bring you. Through all the stages of her life.

A STUMP FOR A TAIL

You can't buy loyalty, they say
I bought it though, the other day;
You can't buy friendship, tried and true,
Well just the same, I bought that too.
I made my bid, and on the spot
Bought love and faith and a whole job lot
Of happiness, so all in all
The purchase price was pretty small.
I bought a single trusting heart,
That gave devotion from the start.
If you think these things are not
for sale, Buy a brown-eyed puppy with
a stump for a tail.

In Tibetan culture, people greet each other by sticking out their tongues. It's also used to show respect. One can't help but think that this fella will get along great there.

Dog Tongue

Holy Cow, look at that tongue! The Tibetan's tongue sticking out culture derives from the belief that a person with a black tongue is wicked. If that's so, then this dog must be the most kind hearted creature on earth!

He looks happy too :)

Question: Dog Cruelty & Injured Pets - Questions from a California Dog Owner

“I know of two possible times of animal cruelty where the dogs have been abused by the owner by kicking, beating with a belt, under-feeding, etc. This really disturbs me as I have always loved animals. I need to take some kind of action if I knew what I could do. I know that the Humane Society might not be of much help in this type of situation, and if they were, might take similar steps to that of the pound. So therefore, I do not believe the dogs would be much better off.”

“My second question is about injured animals. What can I do one sees an injured animal along side the road? Once again, I would love to help but have heard so much about how the city likes to throw animals into pounds and how they fail to treat injured dogs and cats. Do you have any advice on how a person should handle a situation like this?”

Answer:

A few years ago, a spokesperson from the San Diego County Human Society and S.P.C.A. replied to these questions with the following quote:

“Humane Societies within the state of California are autonomous organizations, and have no connection with each other, other than most of the major societies in the state belong to the California State Humane Association.”

They go on to say:

“Unless this person had unfortunate experiences with their local Humane Society, I feel it is unfair to presume that they 'might not be of much help in this situation'. All major humane societies in California have State Humane Officers who are sworn to uphold the laws of the State of California relative to cruelty, and these officers are the logical people to accept and investigate any complaints regarding cruelty to any animal.”

And in response to the second question, the spokesperson explains:

“Relative to the second question concerning injured animals: Section 597f of the Penal Code clearly states that, 'It shall be the duty of all officers of pounds or humane societies, and animal regulation departments of public agencies to convey, and for police and sheriff's departments, to cause to be conveyed all injured cats and dogs found without their owners in a public place directly to a veterinarian.'”

“So regardless of what rumors you may have heard, it is perhaps unfair to again assume that the city pound or Humane Society in your area, or any other city for that matter, would fail to treat an injured dog or cat, and until you first-hand knowledge in this matter I think is best that you call for their assistance.”

If you've just bought or adopted a puppy, know that one day, the "Biting Phase" will start. They're gonna grow sharp little teeth that make you yelp when they chomp down. Don't worry! They never bite hard, and are just testing their teeth.

Puppy Biting

However, it is very important to know how to react when puppies bite you. Always yelp or cry out if pains and put your puppy down for a few minutes. It's important that the little fellow realizes that it's not really acceptable to bite family members hard, and not acceptable to bite non family members at all.

Never whack your puppy if they bite you since I really feel they won't understand why you're doing that. If you find that your dog is biting or damaging the furniture, you can get certain non toxic substances from your local pet store that creates a bitter taste that makes furniture unattractive to the puppy.

Puppies will grow out of the biting phase in time. When their teeth are growing, it relieves them to chomp down on something. Till then, try and even enjoy this phase! When your dog is old, you'll remember the time he used to tug on your jeans with this his wagging.

Kelly Osbourne is well known for her role in "The Osbournes" which is about her father and his family. The series was a reality show documenting her life. She was show some time ago carrying a mixed breed dog called a "puggle", but since then carries around a Shiba Inu - a dog from Japan.

She has earned some criticism for her inability to keep her dogs properly and changing them regularly.

Kelly Osbourne

According to the Japanese, the Shiba Inu is very light on it's feet and extremely "artless". They are very clean dogs that resemble a cat in their movements of licking their paws. They will also try and keep their fur clean and therefore are an easy dog to housetrain requiring a minimal amount of supervision.

The Shiba Inu is also known for it's high pitched scream when it's happy or upset. It is one of the oldest dog breeds known to man.
