Hound Lamp.

This Traditional Golden Brown hound is a splendidly carved piece. Standing at 27 inches, it has a bronzed metal finish and perfectly defines the best characteristics of a hunting hound.

Right from the slim waist to the curved tail in action, the figure speaks of an animated moment where the dog is seeking further direction for the hunt. The whole posture exudes the presence of an intelligent animal trying to understand what her master requires from her. The lithe figure and the shapely legs show the hound in her prime.

An asset to any study and any dog lover.

If we believe in angels and that each person has a guardian angel, what do you think of an angel for our dogs too? One that takes our dogs with them after they leave earth. Remember your dog when she was young, and used to have unbounded energy? When she used to always want to play and bite your socks? They grow old so fast, these friends of ours.

It's like the elves would feel towards men...

And how will she be when she goes off to heaven (Where else can she go?). Will she play again? Only while she looks forward to meeting you again I'm sure.

Poem for Dog Lovers

Hello. I've been expecting you for quite some time.
Here, come sit beside us for awhile .
and let me tell you about this old friend of mine.
She might look tattered or maybe old
But I won't say goodbye until you've been told.
She had the brightest eyes I had ever seen,
And wore a beautiful fur coat that would out shine a queen .
She was never prissy but walked with an aire ......
And oh so polite, you could take her most anywhere.
She could run like the wind and could catch anything she chased
But she protected and sat with me when I had problems to face.
You could not find a friend nearly so dear.
Because no matter the trouble she always stayed near...
She has never asked for much from me;
Just to love and respect her and I think you'll agree .
To give her a good meal plus a nice warm bed is not much to ask ;
When she has given me all her love and to her this was no task.
Now I understand you have a schedule to keep.
But I have a small favor before she nods off to sleep.
Please fold your wings around her and let her feel young while in no pain ;
Dear Guardian Angel of Pets ,
please keep her safe and happy until I see her again
.

I would argue that this is one of the most awesome shots ever. We've all played with our dogs using balls, but look at this one go! All the elements are there - Look at the paws curled up, the legs in the process of lifting off the ground...

But most of all, check out the ears. Laid black, blowing behind him with the sheer speed of movement. He looks just like a plane about to take off!

Here's another one with him having accomplished the feat:

Kylie Minogue is well known as a Pop Star and her unique style of stage entertainment. Most people also know that the Australian Star overcame a battle with breast cancer. It was during the treatment, that the star says she became very close to her ex boyfriend's Rhodesian Ridgeback - Sheba.

Kylie Minogue

Rhodesian Ridgebacks are extremely loyal to their master and though they are not aggressive, they don't get friendly with strangers either. Most trainers know however that they don't respond well to rough treatement and discipline. Perhaps they have a soft side after all!

Interestingly, the dog which hails from southern Africa was used to keep lions occupied while they bought time for their master to arrive and kill it. For this reason, they are also called the African Lion Hound.

Due to the varied abilities of the amazing dog, there has been considerable controversy as to how to classify it, since it performs many functions of the hunting dog very well.

So how come we find that small dogs are more pushy than large ones? People invariably find that the smaller the dog, the more yappy, and arrogant it is. Of course, small dogs are lovable as much as large ones, but people more or less agree that this difference in behavior is not imaginary.

There are two explanations for this. Mine, and those of some others :)

My personal explanation is that small dogs are more insecure. They feel that unless they assert themselves, they will get left out and will fall behind. I have noticed that this assertion often doesn't translate into actual aggression. It's mostly show.

However, there are people who say that small dogs are more yappy because they are allowed to get away with it. The logic goes that big dogs are instantly reprimanded if they show dominant behavior like jumping on top of you, whereas these activities are tolerated and even encouraged. This encourages them to develop behaviors that are aggressive and irritating.

I must say that there is a lot of sense in this line of reasoning.

What do our readers have to say about this?

The Pekingese is one of the most famous dogs in China. Apparently, this is due to it's resemblance to the Chinese Guardian Lions. According to ancient chinese tradition, these lions were held to have magical protective properties that made them common figures in front of temples and palaces.

The Pekingese, with it's fur coat and unique fact bears a resemblance to the lions, and thus the lion's properties were transferred on to the dog as well. Also called "Foo Dogs" or Lion dogs, they were said to be guardian spirits.

For over 2000 years, they were held to be sacred by the Chinese emperors and were thus accorded special privileges.

Pekingese Dog

Pekingese dogs are extremely childlike, thus enforcing their status as toy dogs. However, they are very protective of the person whom they consider to be their master. Their behavior may be likened to a dog that doesn't quite realize that it's a dog and doesn't want the same rules to apply!

A left over trait from it's history in the Chinese palace maybe?

A Dog Lamp for a study!

As soon as I saw this beautiful lamp, the image came to me of the old days, in a nice warm firelit study, with a sheaf of books...and shotguns nearby for hunting!

This fits in very well with that sort of ambiance given the fact that the dog in question is a pointer. Absolutely lovely in conception, the anatomy of the dog is laid out in marvelous detail. The dark wood gives it a lush, serious expression and the pose is superbly executed.

One of the nicest Dog lamps I have seen. Most lamps don't really come close to depicting all the details of the dog, but this one obviously had a dog lover for a maker.

I don't know why, but it seems like a female pointer or a golden retriever?!

There are certain people who keep dogs in the most lavish houses and surroundings, and yet with hold from them that which is most important - genuine care. For these people, a dog is either a showpiece, a watchdog, or a leftover.

Or worse still, perhaps they think that all dogs are alike, and getting another dog is just like the one that died yesterday. Such people can never understand what it is like to form a bond with a dog so deep, that it runs in your bones. And while you can derive joy from another dog, you will never forget.

The Dog Lovers

So they bought you
And kept you in a
Very good home
Cental heating
TV
A deep freeze
A very good home-
No one to take you
For that lovely long run-
But otherwise
'A very good home'
They fed you Pal and Chun
But not that lovely long run,
Until, mad with energy and boredom
You escaped- and ran and ran and ran
Under a car.
Today they will cry for you-
Tomorrow they will buy another dog.

Walking your dog goes way beyond simple exercise. True, that is a factor as well, but more importantly, it gives your dog a chance to unleash it's instincts to explore and move around. Even if you have a large piece of land to yourself, it isn't enough. Imagine the plight of dogs who are kept in an apartment!

Walking your dogs

A dog loves to sniff around, walk around, and explore their area. Left to themselves, they would explore all the streets, alleys and roads in your neighborhood :) . However, since this is an impossibility, it is your duty to do as much as you can for them in the way of giving them a bit of adventure.

It's important to be firm when walking them so that they don't run off with you. Apart from the inconvenience, it also shows that your dog doesn't respect you which can lead to behavioral problems later on. On a personal note, my mother takes our dog for a walk late at night without a leash so that no one sees the dog unleashed. I'm not recommending this to anyone though!
Liv Tyler has achieved lasting in her limited role as "Arwen" in the Lord of the Rings. According to lore, Elves (The race to which Arwen belonged) had a love for nature including animals. Tyler loves dogs, as evinced by her doting care on "Neal", her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

Liv Tyler

Cavaliers are very friendly and lovable. But did you know that at one point of time the dog was given royal favor by King Charles II? Apparently Charles I had a King Charles Spaniel in the household and it was a favorite of his children. Hence the name.

It was decreed that they were never to be disallowed entrance to any public house on the grounds that they were pets and animals! A magnificent honor, and one that isn't shared by any other breed in the world.

Everyone knows "Lassie". The famous Collie initially published by Eric Knight in 1938. For generations, Lassie (a female collie) has enthralled audiences ranging from Children to senior citizens.

In fact, she has been portrayed in Books, Television (Both Movies and TV Shows) and even radio shows. Described as "Mahogany and Sable" in color, story follows Lassie as she strives to return home to the boy she grew up with.

Lassie

However, it is a little known fact that all the Lassies that have been portrayed in Movies are male! Apparently, the males "Look better", and have thicker coats. In addition, they are also slightly bigger than the females making it easier for a child to act alongside for a long time without rapidly outgrowing the dog.

Guess looks are deceiving huh? You can't do that with humans!

Even though the dog has been domesticated, they are still animals with instincts that are brought down from their ancestors in the wild. Sometimes, their instincts override all the training that a human can possibly give. An example that I remember was when a pregnant dog lashed out at me for getting too close. She was well brought up, so she didn't bite - her mouth was closed all the time - but it was a reminder to me that dogs are not humans.

Dog must respect You

It's important that your dog learns to respect you and give you precedence. Not doing so can encourage bullying behavior like growling, or pushiness while coming to food. Such a dog can be a ticking time bomb and for it's own sake, he/she must be taught that humans, and especially you, are superior to them.

You must always keep the idea in the back of your mind, that you are superior. This should manifest itself when your dog is on the leash, when you share food with your dog, and in all other circumstances where your dog's interests might clash even slightly with your own. Your dog must realize that it's interests are secondary to yours. In other words, you must be the alpha member of the pack.

This is neither cruel, nor disrespectful. It is a necessary part of a dog's upbringing for their own sake. Society will not tolerate a dog that goes beyond it's limits, and it is your responsibility to ensure that those limits are never crossed.

Kitsch Dog Lamps

At £50 each, these pretty halogen lamps have quite captured our imagination. There's something unusual about the texture of these playful dog lamps that give a great overall impression when lighted.

Available in many colors including white, red, and orange, each stands just a shy higher than a foot. When lit up, depending on the density of that area, the light shines through in a different hue, and this makes it a very colorful night companion.

Let's shut out all the noise, and listen to the sounds of the universe.....

That's it! I'm getting it..I can SMELL it! I'm at peace now :)

Meditating dog

Who can describe the years that we spent with our dogs? Who can exactly talk about the feeling that permeated that period? We may not have thought of him or her all the time, and they may not have been the center of our lives.

But they were a part of us. A part of our security, and a part of our home. Their smell was around us, and their bark was around the corner. And even though we may have other dogs after they are gone, and will love them as much, we can never bring back those feelings, and those years.

Our friends leave us and go, but they leave such a silent and strong stamp on us that we carry their paw prints on our hearts for the rest of our lives.

MEMORIES

"Not the least hard thing to bear when
they go from us, these quiet friends,
is that they carry away with them so
many years of our lives. Yet, if they
find warmth therein, who would
begrudge them those years that they
have so guarded?
And whatever they take,
be sure they have deserved."

Minnie Driver is best known for her Academy Award nomination in the film "Good Will Hunting". Having recently given birth to her son in September, it's nice to know that they young boy will have black Labrador Retriever to take care of him!

Minnie Driver and her Labrador

Going by registrations alone, the Labrador Retriever is the most popular dog in the western world, in Europe and USA. In fact, they beat the next most popular breeds like German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers by a huge margin (almost 3-5 times).

The Labrador epitomizes the happy life and is most interested in eating and lots of fun! They are absolutely superb with young children, and is a great dog for a young child to start off life with! The saying goes that they can hold an egg in their jaws without breaking it. Such is the gentleness of this breed.

They are perfect for home and enjoy large families with lots of noise and enjoyment! A labrador brings a sparkle to any home :)

Come and see our Labrador Retriever puppies.

We've always known that having a dog is good for us. It makes us more likable people, and more likely to show compassion and empathy.

However, did you know that research backs up this observation? A study in 1999 on 48 stockbrokers has demonstrated that the group that had a pet including dogs were far less likely to have heart attacks than the group that didn't.

Stress free life

Following the results of this test, many who didn't have a dog, went out and got one! It's official. Maintaining a dog keeps you healthier and more stressful. In addition, children who are exposed to dogs early on are at a much lower risk of becoming allergic to substances due to the body's strengthened immune system.

So if you were looking for an excuse to get yourself a dog, this is a good one!

Dog Lamps - Dancing Dogs

This week's dog lamp is unusual. Instead of depicting a scene from real dog life, it tries to project a human situation onto our furry friends.

Of course, this doesn't mean it's not lovely. The two dogs seem to be dancing together, or even taking their vows to swear fidelity to one another! A very pretty scene.

Unfortunately, the website doesn't give many details about this particular dog lamp, like the material it's made of. If I had to guess however, I would say it's porcelain. The price tag is a bit steep at $260. Maybe it has some other significance that we're not aware of.

But nonetheless, nice to look at, and a funny addition to a dog lover's home decor.

So? Wacky or tacky? What do you think dear Dog lover?

Just like in the cartoons, when you see the pilots with their ears steaming back into the wind, and their eyes become slits, along with their cheeks getting pulled backwards!

This dog's name is Banana, and if she had her way, who knows where she'd take the car :)

The photographer's guess is that she's eying the bakery nearby!

I wonder sometimes, that if all the dogs that have lived and died over the thousands of years that man has kept dogs as companions were counted, wouldn't it be amazing to see just how many faithful souls have lived on the earth?

And with each of those dogs, his or her master would stand by them, and what a gathering they would make! The past can never be erased completely, and all of us - dog lovers - are joined forever to each of these dogs and to each of these people. For we share something together. Something that no person who has never really had a dog can understand....

THE BEST PLACE TO BURY A DOG

"There is one best place to bury a dog.
"If you bury him in this spot, he will
come to you when you call - come to you
over the grim, dim frontier of death,
and down the well-remembered path,
and to your side again.

"And though you call a dozen living
dogs to heel, they shall not growl at
him, nor resent his coming,
for he belongs there.

"People may scoff at you, who see
no lightest blade of grass bent by his
footfall, who hear no whimper, people
who may never really have had a dog.
Smile at them, for you shall know
something that is hidden from them,
and which is well worth the knowing. "The one best place to bury a good
dog is in the heart of his master."

We learned last week about some basic house training for your puppy, and this week, we're going to explore a very popular technique called paper training.

It basically involves designating a certain area in your house by marking it with waster paper. That area will be used by your puppy for potty training.

When you notice that your puppy is going to poop (yes you have to keep a close watch, or else it's a no go) you must pick her up place her on the sheets so that she does her business on the paper.

After you clean up, cover the area again with fresh paper, and keep a slightly soiled piece in the area so that she will associate the smell of that area with her potty routine. Soon she will go there of her own accord when she needs to poop. As your puppy learns each time that she is to go to the designated area, keep reducing the area of the paper so that it reaches a consistent size.

Reinforce the fact that potty is only to be done in the marked area by immediately cleaning up accidental drops in the wrong place with diluted vinegar. This will remove the smell and will prevent the dog from associating that area with her potty again.

paper training

With a little bit of praise and encouragement, your dog is set!

The "The O.C" start Rachel Bilson is well known for her role as "Summer Roberts". Well known among the Teenage Populice, she won the award from "Choice Hottie".

Her fiancee Adam Brody who was also her co-star gave her a PitBull for her birthday. The two of them grew so attached to it, that they now share custody over "Penny" even though they are no longer together.

Rachel Bilson and her Pit Bull

Contrary to popular perception, Pit Bills feel pain just like any other dog. Breeders have tried to make the dog ignore pain or discomfort in order to get the job done, and this is the reason why some people think they feel no pain.

They don't "Lock their Jaws" either.

Monday, November 03, 2008

Inbreeding of dogs is quite a significant problem. In the quest for getting the "Perfect Dog", breeders try and wipe out variations within breeds, and this leads to a progressively smaller gene pool to choose from.

Dalmatian

What this means, is that the pups that are born are more likely to have "defective" genes that manifest themselves as congenital conditions. That is why several thoroughbreds are not very healthy. I myself have lost a beloved dog - A German Shepherd named Candy - to a congenital defect when she was in the prime of her life at the age of three.

Almost one third of all Dalmatians suffer from hearing disability due to congenital birth defects. This is a significant problem, as one third is a huge percentage. It probably can't be helped, but this fact should make people more sensitive to the issues that arise from Inbreeding and the detrimental effects it has on the health of the dog.

Naturally, this also leads to a higher incidence of deaths and lowers the average life expectancy of pure breed dogs. It's very sad, and maybe what I'm trying to say is - don't complain if your dog has a few inconsistencies (unless you plan to show him/her in a professional competition). Inconsistencies mean that your dog is probably more healthy than one that is "really pure", and surely that is a small price to pay?
