German Shepherds are popular dogs around the world. Also known as an Alsatian, in France and the UK, this dog was originally bred to herd sheep; hence its name. Apart from their role in the police force, they are also used as guard dogs, blind dogs, search and rescue dogs, military dogs and even as therapy dogs. The German Shepherd is the third most popular breed in the US. They also make loyal and loving pets inside the home. They enjoy being around people and other animals, although socialization is critical for young puppies in order to prevent aggressive and dangerous behavior as an adult. German Shepherds are well-suited for obedience lessons in various schutzhund trials. It remains a beautiful and intelligent breed.
