Chihuahua: Gidget the Mascot from the Taco Bell Advert

The Taco Bell chihuahua was a popular advertising figure and mascot used by Taco Bell. The Chihuahua is a breed commonly associated with Mexico, as are the tacos that the restaurant serves. The name of the dog used as a model is "Gidget" and in commercials, the dog (sometimes depicted as a Mexican revolutionary wearing a beret or as a bandit wearing a sombrero) was made to speak through special effects. His advertising catch-phrase was "¡Yo quiero Taco Bell!", Spanish for "I want Taco Bell!". It was subtitled on commercials as "I want some Taco Bell." The figure grew popular, so much so that even toy figures of the dog were produced. Taco Bell stopped showing the dog in advertisements in 2000 in order to pursue other campaigns.

Question:

Hello Mario

I was wondering: what is the best way to get over the biting of a bull terrier? Everyone says they have the same problem. I was hoping you could give me some insight because I know you have dealt with some pretty wild dogs. She is crazy...no, not to crazy, since she has learned to sit, stay somewhat and she is pretty good about going potty-ing outside.

Answer:

Tim,

The best way to stop that biting is to each time she tries, to hold her mouth shut, shake her head firmly and say the word NO! If she continues, do it again and again until she gets the point. Most of this is play, but you must teach her to stop before it becomes a real nuisance. This behavior is quite typical of all young pups. Let me know if it works. There are other methods. Though this is the one most commonly used.

Mario

Response:

Yes Mario, I agree it is just play but when I hold her muzzle she thinks it's a game. I have tried pinning her down and trying to make her submit but she just doesn't see it like that. The only thing that has been working so far, is the bitter apple spray. Whenever she bites I put some on my finger, let her bite again and then touch her tongue with my finger and say " Don't bite'. She doesn't use her canines really but when you say "no" she growls and gets vicious, while jumping up to bite my face and stuff. I know its not going to stop right away but it needs to soon with all the young children around my house.

Response:

You can also try timing her out by putting her in a small confined area for thirty minutes. Such as the crate she came in. If she comes out biting, repeat the holding of her mouth shut, the use of the word NO and put her right back in.

Response:

Well Mario, I have put in many many hours on vigorous training with Celine. I was skeptical at first and when I got her I wasn't happy but now everything has paid off. She is doing great in the house and not many accidents have occured. When she did do something wrong it was most likely my fault. She knows her name well, she comes on command, sits on command, shakes hands, is working on laying down and staying. She is tracking very well too. She understands "no". I am going to the vet tomorrow for her next round of vacc. so I will get a clean bill of health then. He said she is the best bull terrier he has ever seen. Other than the worms, she is in top shape and health. He also said he would recommend Euro Puppy to everybody he knows!

Sincerely,

Tim

Chelsea, the Cocker Spaniel

The American Cocker Spaniel originated in the U.K and was brought to Canada and the United States in the late 1800s. The signature trait of the American Cocker Spaniel is its dark, expressive eyes that reflect a happy, loving, and active nature. They have long hanging ears, a rounded, refined and cleanly chiseled head with silky, feathered, medium-length coat. Cockers are divided by the breed standard into three varieties: black, ASCOB (Any Solid Color Other than Black), and parti-colors. Their name cocker is commonly held to stem from their use to hunt the woodcock birds in England, but today this breed is used to hunt a variety of game-birds and water-fowl. A Spaniel is respectful of his master's authority without much challenge. This breed is sweet, sensitive and endearing, cheerful and merry. They are happy tail-waggers and make wonderful pets to anyone who has a lot of love to give in return. Today's American Cocker Spaniel is as always, a small and versatile dog. It remains popular as a pet, but is also known for its workmanlike attributes that make it a stunning show dog, lively companion hunter, competitive gaming dog, and a gentle therapy dog.

• Dogs (and wolves and foxes) are descended from a small, weasel-like mammal called Miacis which was a tree-dwelling creature and existed about 40 million years ago. Dogs, as we know them today, first appeared in Eurasia about 13,000 years ago, and were probably a direct descendant of a small, grey wolf (not from the type of jackal or jackal/wolf as previously thought). Dogs were first domesticated by cavemen in the Paleolithic age and gradually developed (or were bred) into the breeds known today. All dogs, from the German Shepherd to the tiny Poodle, are direct descendants of wolves. They can all breed together and produce fertile offspring. Technically they are of the same species. But before that, wolves descended from a species knows as the Tomarctus - a creature that roamed the earth over 15 million years ago.

This is what a Tomarctus looked like. Not much of a Poodle, but certain canine features are indeed noticable...

Healthy and Happy Puppies Find Loving Homes in the Far-East!

While successfully integrating itself into the Middle-Eastern minds, the Far-East has also proved to be a market with wonderful potentials for Euro Puppy. With many success stories in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, China (Hong Kong) and Japan, Euro Puppy can now safely say, that they are the top provider of the highest quality European puppies from the best European breeders! A satisfied customer saw the arrival of his much-awaited French Bulldog in Singapore. Although regulations made it impossible for him to immediately take his puppy home, as one month quarantine was compulsory, the little French Bulldog found a loving home with his Singaporean family after 30 days. Euro Puppy has a loyal customer in Hong Kong as well, who has come back not once, not twice, but four times to Euro Puppy, to expand her “collection” Tibetan Mastiffs! She is often stopped by locals, and she is told that her dogs are some of the best Tibetan Mastiffs in Hong Kong! The satisfied owner remarks: “I am very proud to say that my four Tibetan Mastiffs are the top of their breed, here in Hong Kong. Euro Puppy only gives the Best. I am lucky to have found Euro Puppy and I am happy to have this wonderful breed!” Her dogs are non-aggressive as well, while the ones born in China seem to be. Euro Puppy’s top European breeders have taken the aggression out of this mammoth-sized breed to make them loving family members and astute guard-dogs as well. Another Euro Puppy puppy to have arrived to Hong Kong is the rather rare and large Hungarian Komondor breed that goes by the name of “White Rock”. He remains one of the few if not the only one of his kind in the whole of Hong Kong!

Pugs

A Pug is a toy dog breed with a wrinkly face and a small body. They were bred to adorn the laps of the Chinese Emperors during the Shang Dynasty (1766-1122 BC), in Eastern China, where they were known as "Lo-Chiang-Se" or "Foo". The Pug's popularity spread to Tibet, where they were mainly kept by monks, and then their popularity went onto Japan, and finally to Europe. The breed was first imported in the late 16th and 17th centuries by merchants from the Dutch East Indies Trading Company and became the dog of the Dutch Royal family. Their fine, glossy coats can be apricot, fawn, silver or black. The word "pug" may have come from the old English word: Pugg, which was an affectionate term for a playful little devil or monkey, or Puck, which is a mischievous spirit of Nature. The stern expression of the Pug belies its true sense of fun. Pugs are very sociable dogs and usually stubborn as well. However, they are playful, charming, clever and are known to succeed in dog obedience skills as well. In general, they are very attentive dogs, always at their owner's feet, on their lap, or following them from room to room.
There is no doubt about it. Dogs are known to have a therapeautic effect on people who are either healthy or ill. In Houston, caring individuals with their faithful friends visit hospitals, bringing a little hope and joy for those that need it most. The Dogue de Bordeaux puppy (called Ruben, aka "Darth") can be seen on the right. He was recently sold by Euro Puppy to a customer who has been training him, while he attends classes to become a therapy dog in Houston. Ruben and some other faithful paws recently attended a photo shoot to create this calendar to raise money for the elderly as well as for children's hospitals. Now that is something we are immensely proud of at Euro Puppy!

With the festive season upon us, looking out for the health of your dog is just as important as looking out for your own waistline. The saying goes: you are what you eat. Often one’s lifestyle is inadvertently mimicked by your faithful friend as well. It is imperative to look out for the weight of your dog. If you feel you are not overfeeding him, take him or her to the vet for a full physical. A lot of the time, substantial weight gain is due to the fact that well-meaning owners give out more treats than is actually healthy. Canine Obesity can more often than not, be traced back to the owner. However, sudden weight gain can also be due to hyperthyroidism, or Cushing’s Disease.

Festive season equals eating more. Hence, it is no surprise that there are more scraps as well. With guests galore and preparations all around, pooch time is often decreased to a minimum. You should say time-out and go for quick walks with your furry friend. Take a break from cooking or from decorating the Christmas tree. Do this a couple of times during the day. You will see it will be beneficial for both of you. This is also a good form of diversion for both of you, when the guests have arrived and there is just so much to take care of. Most dogs burn the calories during the day, so by reducing and replacing a night-time intake with a morning and daytime intake, he has a better chance to burn those calories throughout the day. Exercise-wise, remember your time in the gym, after months of leaving it out. You feel ill to the core. An overweight pooch will be feeling the same, even if you try to train him for the next marathon! The secret is moderation! Slowly but surely, your furry friend will get used to longer walks and a routine will be established. As with any weight control diet: do your best to try and keep his treats and sweets to a minimum this festive season, even if his eyes say otherwise!

Euro Puppy Establishes Itself in the Middle East!

The Middle East conjures up images of spices, mysterious spirituality, vibrant colors and heat waves. Well at Euro Puppy; things have been heating up quite rapidly! In the United Arab Emirates, luxury is norm, and one would think that puppies and dogs are not in the least bit important. What a misconception! The majority of the population is of expatriate origin, and thus it is not surprising that the United Arab Emirates is a gateway for puppy love! Forget the spices, the vibrant colors and the heat waves…for now. Middle Eastern countries, like Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, and Oman are showing an increased need for canine companionship, it seems. Hardly any facilities are present that offer high quality puppies for the expatriate community. Euro Puppy has been proud of the fact that so many excited dog-lovers from the UAE have contacted us. We offer only the highest quality puppies and dogs to satisfied customers. The Middle East has been virgin territory, and although Gucci, Versace and Diamonds sparkle everywhere, unconditional and unadulterated puppy love has been sorely ignored…up till now! Euro Puppy has established itself in all the major cities of the United Arab Emirates and beyond!

Butkus the Bullmastiff: from Rocky I (1976) and Rocky II (1979)

At the time of ownership, Stallone’s pet Bullmastiff, Butkus, appeared in the first Rocky film as an often-teased favorite pet of Balboa’s who lived in Adrian’s pet shop. In the Film, Butkus was given to Rocky as a gift from Adrian to keep him company while he trained. In real life however, Butkus was Sylvester Stallone's dog. Stallone took the 145-pound (61 Kg) Butkus on the three-day train trip from L.A. to Philadelphia for the exterior filming of the film. The Bullmastiff’s rough look went well with the rough look, that the movie offered. Bullmastiffs are exceptionally devoted to their owners and make great guard dogs and pets as well.

Plants provide beauty and fresh air to our indoor spaces. However, your puppy or dog may see houseplants as an extra snack or a toy. This can prove dangerous, since some plants are toxic or poisonous. Learn which plants are potentially toxic and keep them high out of reach. Some toxic houseplants include:

• Amaryllis
• Azalea
• Caladium
• Creeping Charlie
• Dracaena
• Dieffenbachia
• Easter Lily
• Golden Pothos
• Mistletoe
• Philodendron
• Peace Lily
• Rhododendron
• Lilies
• Foxglove
• Daffodils
• Rhubarb leaves
• Yew
• Castor bean
• Sago palm
• Kalanchoe
• Tulip bulbs

Now with the festive season upon us, please do keep Mistletoe in mind. Although you might want to get close to your loved one under it, don't let your furry friend take a bite! If you may not be all that knowledgable about your plants and their latin names, please consult someone who is.
According to Psychologist and dog researcher: Dr. S. Coren, author of "The Intelligence of Dogs", canine intelligence can also be recoded. Working with over 200 show judges, he devised a record that shows us who the "caninesteins" of our world are...to the more ...uhm....academically-challenged pooches. Ready? Here it goes....

Grover, the Chocolate Lab

The Labrador Retriever (also Labrador or Lab for short), is widely considered as the most popular dog breed in the world, and since 1991, the most popular breed by registration in the United States, the U.K , and several other countries. It is also the most popular breed of assistance dog in the United States, Australia, and many other countries. Due to their detection, intelligence and working abilities, they are widely used by the police as well. The Labrador Retriever was originally called the St. John's Dog (from which it emerged), or the Lesser Newfoundland. Other origins of the name include the Spanish or Portuguese word for rural/agricultural workers; Portuguese "lavradores" or Spanish "labradores". Until the 20th century black was the preferred color. Brown and yellow labs were only accepted by the 1930’s and in the late 18th century, both yellow and brown pups were culled because the color was unacceptable. A silver color is sometimes found in the United States. It is a disqualification in shows, although Silver Labradors are registered by the AKC as "chocolate". Labradors are good-tempered, very agile, adaptable and devoted companions. They are intelligent, keen and biddable, with a strong will to please. Kindly of nature, they show no trace of aggression or undue shyness.

Hector the Bulldog: from the Looney Tunes. (1950-)

Hector the Bulldog is an animated cartoon character in the Warner Bros., Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series of cartoons. Hector is a muscle-bound bulldog with gray fur. He walks pigeon-toed and his face bears a perpetual scowl between two immense jowls. He was a minor player in several Tweety and Sylvester cartoons directed by Friz Freleng throughout the 1950s. His usual role is to protect Tweety from Sylvester, usually at Granny’s request. He typically does this through brute strength alone. Hector is played by voice actor Frank Welker. Typical to his breed, under that constant frown, Bulldogs are actually quite lovable characters!

Classifying dogs into categories began with the Romans. They had the following 6 categories: house dogs, shepherd dogs, sporting dogs, war dogs, dogs that ran by scent, and dogs that ran by sight. Interestingly enough, Mosaics meaning "Beware of the Dog" could even be found on doorsteps in ancient Roman cities. Today, more than three hundred breeds of dogs exist worldwide. The American Kennel Club recognizes 148 breeds which are classified into 7 categories: Terrier, Working, Sporting, Hound, Herding, Toy and Non-sporting.

At Euro Puppy we would like to wish everyone a Joyous Festive Season and Happy Holidays! One can hardly think of Christmas without the concept of gift giving. In today’s day and age, gifts range from the classic, to the wacky. The really memorable ones are those which are funny, clever, convenient and useful. As the top provider of healthy and happy puppies, we believe that it is also our responsibility to ask you to bear a few things in mind when contemplating giving a puppy as a gift this Christmas. Buying a puppy is a serious decision that one makes... during the Christmas season or otherwise.

It is always better to let someone select their own four-legged companion, based on their own likes and wants. Buying a puppy for Christmas as a gift is by all means acceptable, as long as you get the Right Dog . You'll have to ask your family member what breed they want. After all, there are over 150 breeds to choose from! A puppy as a gift should definitely not come as a surprise - If you're planning on buying a Christmas puppy, make sure the recipient wants a puppy. Don't drop a bundle of responsibility on someone who doesn't want that responsibility. Otherwise, it'll end up at the shelter, and likely to be put down. A puppy must bond with his new owner and if the whole family pitches in and helps, it becomes easier to give a stable environment and enough attention to a new puppy . A gift or a toy can easily be returned. But a puppy is a living, breathing creature. It cannot be hired out, like a good movie, and then when the festive season is over, you return him in goodwill. Care for the puppy, should come from the whole family. First and foremost, the recipient, should be well prepared...much like an expectant mother, getting ready to go to the hospital, by packing her "little suitcase".

As with all things German, be that an appliance or a car, perfection is always expected. It is thus not surprising that the Rottweiler is a perfect breed as well. Of German origin, the Rottweiler is one of the most beautiful and most misunderstood dogs. Euro Puppy's top breeders have used this perfection to their advantage to carry on the noble European Rottweiler lines. At Euro Puppy, there are gorgeous Rottweiler puppies for sale, which will grow into powerful specimens.

Due to its rather ominous look, Rottweilers are often believed to be the most vicious of all the dog breeds. In the hands of a responsible owner, a well-trained and socialized Rottweiler can be a reliable and alert dog that is a loving companion as well. Being intelligent creatures, it is not surprising that the police far and wide utilize the Rottweiler for its keen sense of smell, observation, and trainability. Apart from making great police dogs, Rottweilers make great protection dogs as well! The Germans gave them the name of: “Schutzhund”, which in German means: "protection dog". It also refers to a sport that focuses on developing and evaluating those traits in dogs that make them more useful and happier companions to their owners. A Rottweilers mental stability, endurance, structural efficiencies, ability to scent, willingness to work, courage, and trainability are brought to the fore. A trained Rottweiler- like any other working dog that possesses mental stability - has trust and confidence in itself, allowing it to be at peace with its surroundings. While maintaining its aloofness with strangers, and protecting its territory and family, a Rottweiler’s balanced personality will be apparent within a loving family surrounding.

Euro Puppy is always happy to get pictures of pups, that either stay small even as adults or grow into large Goliaths, like these Top Quality European Blue Great Danes at Blue River Breeders. Beautiful Blue Great Danes

Blue colored Great Danes are of giant size, gentle personality and of gorgeous color. The blue is almost a steely, metallic blue that is unique and rare. Often called the Apollo of dogs, the Great Dane can trace its paw prints as far back as the times of the Egyptians. Regardless of where in the world their gene-pool develops, it is good to know that loving families and top quality breeders of Great Danes perpetuate the beauty of this breed even further. Thank you for sharing your pictures with us!

Kes, the Yorkie

The Yorkie was bred as a ratter, used to kill mice and rats in small places and they originated in Yorkshire, which is a rugged region in northern England. Yorkshire Terriers were given their breed name in 1874, and were first introduced in the United States in 1872. They have now become the second most popular dog breed in the United States, trailing only the Labrador Retriever, according to the ACK statistics of 2006. The Yorkie has a free, jaunty gait, with both head and tail held high. Toy stature does not necessarily mean frail or fragile. The breed standard dictates that a Yorkshire Terrier must weigh no more than seven pounds while being 8 and 9 inches tall. There is no distinction made in the standard between Yorkies of various sizes. There is no "teacup" or "standard" within the breed standard. They are intelligent, independent and courageous little dogs that make lovely pets and family members.

The "Little Dog from Havana" was developed in Cuba, and was brought to the island country by Spanish sailors. The Havanese - as it became known- was considered a rare dog, and the Cuban Revolution didn’t do much to perpetuate their gene-pool. Many of the rich landowners escaped, leaving their dogs behind. By 1970, there were only 11 of these candy-floss dogs in the US, and thanks to the rigorous and well-meaning breeders within the US and Europe, their number and popularity has grown.

Euro Puppy has been working with top Havanese breeders from Europe since the onset. These are breeders who have extensive knowledge about the breed standards and take an active role in socializing the Havanese puppies; making sure that they are healthy and happy puppies. This is an imperative chara
