This is somewhat controversial, but the figures speak for themselves. Every year, Americans spend four times the amount of money on Dog Food, than on Baby food.

The reasons for this are open to interpretation, but my guess is that more and more people are choosing to have dogs instead of rearing kids. No judgments there! Dogs are great for people who don't want the "hassle" of being responsible for a human being for 18 years or so.

Or it could mean that dogs just eat a hell of a lot more than babies! But given that Baby food is so expensive, that could nullify the effect.
Anyway, imagine spending $1.5 Billion a year on Pet Food!

So imagine showing your Chow Chow to a friend who's never seen one before. Your dog is hot and panting, and your friend recoils in surprise - "Whadya know? He's got a black tongue"!

That's literally black and not just a figure of speech to indicate psychic powers. The Chow Chow is the only dog on earth that has a black tongue, while all other dogs are content to have pink ones.

The Chow Chow breed is well known for the love of it's home and reluctance to take to strangers immediately. Be warned! Certain insurance policies specifically make the Chow Chow exempt from their protection due to this.

However, the Chow Chow shows remarkable loyalty to it's owner and therefore highly prized for this quality.

Every year over 4 million dogs are destroyed in the United States. It's a sad thing. I'm not saying that dogs should not be put to sleep (if they are seen to be a threat, then unfortunately that might have to be done). All I'm saying that it's an indication that things need improving.

One solution allows you to directly help. If you spay or sterilize your dog, then there you might prevent more dogs from being slaughtered. We call ourselves a humane society, and so let's behave like one.

Be a responsible dog owner! Don't put your dog on the street as I am sure you wouldn't do it with your children either!

Each Tuesday we will share a photo we received claiming to be the World's Largest Dog. A lot of you might have seen these photos. We couldn't verify the source so we leave it up to you to believe it or not. Photoshop can make look anything big. Let us know what you think. Have you seen any of these dogs in person? Do you have a photo that you want to share with us?

9) The Largest Irish Wolfound:
Another Irish Wolfhound. A dog? Is it a dog or a statue? Anyways, I let you decide. I think this photo is very funny.

The qualities of dogs are frequently desired and envied by humans. Artists and sculptors frequently try and bring out these aspects of their subjects by strategically placing dogs at the feet of the people they are trying to depict.

Dog Art

If it's a woman who has a dog at her feet, the qualities of the woman are shown to be affection and fidelity. The artist indirectly tries to associate these qualities with women by instigating the feeling in the viewer by depicting the dog.

Men like priests (or the pope) or religious warriors used to have dogs placed at their feet in depictions to symbolize the faithfulness with which they server their master (God).

So we see from this that dogs have always struck a deep note with mankind. Artists, who are among the most sensitive of men have liberally used dogs to more poignantly bring out the characteristics of their subjects.

The eyesight of dogs differs from that of humans in various ways. It even varies from breed to breed. Some dogs have a field of vision that is wider than the 180 degrees of humans.

Dogs with long noses have something called a visual streak. This means that they are able to scan the horizon very quickly, the section of their retina that stretches from one corner to the other contains photoreceptors that are extremely sensitive.

However, dogs with short noses seem to have an area centralis. This means that like humans, they have a central area that contains sensitive nerve endings. This is thought to give them better depth perception, not unlike the eyesight of humans.

Most people when they see a Dachshund for the first time are struck by it's odd shape. Long like a sausage, with long flappy ears, they wonder, "Why on earth would anyone breed a dog like this?"

The reason is, that Dachshunds were bred as hunting dogs, and their long shape and low height makes them uniquely suited for tracking small game and plunging headfirst into tunnels!

True to their breeding, these dogs display an unusual thrill of hunting for small game. They will enjoy chasing them down through tunnels or through small places.

6) The Largest Caucasian Mountain Dog:
Come on?!!! Is it really a question whether this photo is fake or not?! FAKE
Yes, Caucasian Mountain Dogs are big and the size of their heads can be huge. And they can be just as dangerous for intruders as their size suggests. Take my advise and do not ever try to go close to a Caucasian Mountain Dog unless the owner is present.

According to the breed standard they weight 45-72kg. I believe you can easily find CMDs close to 90kg.
